About the Role:

SiSTEM is hiring an experienced college algebra tutor to work with students in Denton, with a focus on the UNT campus and surrounding area.
This is not a volume tutoring gig. SiSTEM tutors work as trusted academic partners with students who need to pass, and pass well. College algebra is a gatekeeper course. A grade of C or better in MATH 1100 is required before it counts as a prerequisite for other math courses, and a lot of degree plans stall right there. Your job is to make sure that does not happen.

What You'll Cover:

Core college algebra topics, including:
  • Functions, function notation, domain and range, and transformations.
  • Linear and quadratic equations, inequalities, and applications.
  • Polynomial and rational functions, including graphing and asymptotic behavior.
  • Exponential and logarithmic functions and equations.
  • Systems of equations and inequalities.
  • Complex numbers, radicals, and rational exponents.
  • Sequences, series, and conic sections where the course includes them.
  • Algebra review and skill gap repair for students who placed into the course underprepared.

  • ALEKS and MyMathLab homework support, including how to work problems on paper instead of guessing through attempts.

Who You'll Work With:

Students taking college algebra at UNT and at Denton-area campuses, plus high school students taking the course for dual credit. Most are motivated and under real time pressure. They are not looking for a homework service. They are looking for someone who can make the material make sense before the next exam.

What You'll Do:

  • Work one-on-one with students on college algebra at their current level.
  • Build conceptual understanding, not just completed assignments.
  • Identify and close the foundational algebra gaps that are causing students to struggle in the course.
  • Prepare students for graded exams, quizzes, and placement tests.
  • Align sessions with each student's broader academic roadmap through SiSTEM's planning tools.
  • Communicate on progress and strategy when appropriate.
  • Maintain high standards of preparation and professionalism.

What SiSTEM Is Looking For:

SiSTEM is selective about who joins the team. Strong candidates typically have:
  • 3+ years of teaching, tutoring, or academic mentoring experience in math.
  • Deep expertise in college algebra and the pre-calculus level material around it.
  • Experience with college students, adult learners, or dual credit students, not only younger students.
  • A track record of helping students raise grades and pass required courses.
  • Familiarity with ALEKS, MyMathLab, or similar platforms.
  • Clear, patient communication and the ability to make algebra click for students who think they are "not a math person."
  • Professional reliability.

Bonus: current or former college math instructors, graduate students or TAs in math or a STEM field, former UNT Math Lab or Learning Center tutors, engineers and STEM professionals who tutor, and educators with degrees in mathematics or math education.
